In June 20-22, 2003 Clermont
and Fayette County commemorated the June
1903 Grand Reunion of
Iowa's Twelfth Infantry Civil War
Regiment. 100 years ago,
thousands of Civil War veterans, their
families, and a number of dignitaries
converged on Clermont for a Grand Reunion.
The events were remembered with
re-enactment groups, Civil War bands and
Lincoln impersonation programs, and dozens
of activities.
The Twelfth Infantry included the
famous Company C (Upper Iowa University
recruits), largely from Fayette County,
who joined Union forces in October 1862
and served past the war's end into January
1866.
Between 6,000 - 8,000 persons
attended the 1903 reunion in Clermont,
hosted by former Iowa Governor William Larrabee and builder of Montauk, the
Larrabee family residence open as a
historic site in Clermont. Dedications of
the Lincoln Statue, Henderson Statue, and
other statues at Montauk were held on June
19-20, 1903. Speeches were given by
Speaker of the U.S. House of
Representatives David B. Henderson
(originally from rural Clermont-Postville
and the only person ever from Iowa to
claim that title), Governor Larrabee, U.S.
Senator James Dolliver of Fort Dodge and
other notables.
Company C and the Iowa Twelfth
Infantry have been immortalized by Roger
Bowen and Dr. Charles Clark in their book,
The University Recruits, printed in
1991. |
