Home of Iowa's 12th governor, Wm Larrabee and his wife, Anna and seven children:  Charles, Augusta, Julia, Anna, William, Frederic, and Helen
-Mansion built in 1874; designed by Architect:  E. Townson Mix from Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  (The architect also designed the Historic Villa Louis Mansion in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin).

The entrance to the Montauk grounds approaches the Larrabee Mansion from the rear.


Objects of everyday life are displayed
throughout the home.

The sitting room is a warm and inviting place,
similar to an informal family room today.

Fine examples of art grace the
Larrabee Mansion.

The Music Room holds treasures collected by the Larrabee family  from around the world.  The grand piano was used often by Miss Anna, the musician of the family.

Mr. Larrabee was so fond of.

Displayed over the mantel of the fireplace are the four daughters of Wm and Anna Larrabee from left to right:  Augusta, Julia, Helen and Anna.

A glimpse into the bedroom of Miss Anna reveals a beautifully-detailed Victorian dress and other articles of Victorian life.

The master bedroom showcases an ornately-carved headboard and items used by the governor and his wife.

The children' room is a delight, featuring toys of yesteryear and period children's clothing.

A quiet corner.

Augusta's room holds a collection of her artwork.  She was an exceptional artist, with talents rivaling many famous male artists of her day.

Servants prepared delicious meals in the mansion's kitchen.

Guests to Montauk can wander through the outbuildings. 
The Montauk Mansion, Union Sunday School, and Clermont Museum are operated by the State Historical Society of Iowa. 
This tour has been approved by the Iowa State Historical Society.
