HISTORIC POINTS OF
INTEREST: |
|
|

Montauk was the home of Iowa's 12th governor, William
Larrabee. He was the first governor to
serve in the new capital building in Des Moines.
(The Government of Iowa moved from Iowa City to
Des Moines in 1857, into a temporary brick
building less than two blocks from today's capital
- this was the home of the Legislature and
housed the Governor's Office for 30 years.)
A step into
William Larrabee's Clermont home is a step back into
history. The
fully furnished Victorian home depicts the life of a bygone era, filled with tales of
adventure and keepsakes from the family's many world travels.
Open
noon to 4 p.m. daily, Memorial Day weekend to October 31. Open other
times
by special arrangement for group tours. Montauk
holds special events throughout the year; check
our Calendar of Events
for schedule listings. To learn

society's website: http://www.iowahistory.org/sites/index.html

The Lincoln Statue was made as a
duplicate
of the one in Edinburgh, Scotland. On the base
there are four tablets, depicting local and national
interests. The granite base bears the inscription, "Erected
in 1902 in memory of soldiers and sailors of the Civil War,
1861-1865."
This Lincoln Statue is sometimes referred to as
the Bissell Statue after the artist who created
it. For an online tour of Lincoln Statues

Larrabee
School. This school was built and donated to the
city of Clermont by Governor and Mrs. Wm. Larrabee.
They studied many other schools to develop, what they
believed to be, the "Ideal School." It is a
massive building made of steel, brick, marble and stone in
the classic Greek style. Read
an excerpt about this building from a 1913 newspaper... National
